Background

As many AWA members know, Alaska has a dark history regarding wolves. In 1996 and 2000, with much help from the Alaska Wildlife Alliance, ballot measures were passed that stopped the airborne killing of wolves. Unfortunately, the effect of these ballot initiatives only lasted two years. Following that, the Alaska Legislature and Board of Game were able to in both cases circumvent the will of Alaska’s voters and ultimately return to aerial wolf killing.

To address this issue, the Alaska Wildlife Alliance teamed with Alaskans for Wildlife and was instrumental in gathering over 56,000 signatures to again allow Alaskans to vote to stop airborne wolf killing.

What AWA has done

AWA was instrumental in gathering the 56,000 signatures to get this critical ballot measure to Alaska’s voters. We will continue to work closely with Alaskans for Wildlife to ensure success of this initiative that will stop the senseless airborne killing of Alaska’s precious wolves.

What You Can Do

Because this issue is so fundamental to our mission, we have set up a separate fund to ensure success at the voting booth in August of 2008. It is now time to start this vital campaign and we welcome donations dedicated to this specific cause.

Vote!

You can significantly benefit Alaska’s wolves and ecosystems by doing everything possible to ensure that Alaska voters cast their ballot in opposition to Airborne Wolf Killing on Tuesday, August 26, 2008.

LTEs!

As with so many Alaska Wildlife issues, your Letters to the Editor can keep this campaign front and center in the minds of Alaska’s voters. Talking points can include:

  • The vital role healthy wolf populations play in the natural balance of healthy ecosystems.
  • Earlier efforts to decimate wolves have ultimately resulted in negative impacts on the moose and caribou that these ill-advised programs were supposed to help.
