Threats to Alaska's Marine Mammals

Polar Bears and Beluga Whales Threatened PDF Print E-mail

Background

For over a decade, virtually all of Alaska’s marine mammals have been experiencing significant population declines. Prominent among these threatened species are the polar bears of northern Alaska and the Beluga whales from the Cook Inlet in Southcentral Alaska.

What AWA is Doing

The Alaska Wildlife Alliance has been a voice for these threatened populations and will continue to monitor and work with the US Fish & Wildlife Service to find solutions, both long term and short term, to address this unfolding tragedy. Among the problems are human-caused global warming, over fishing primarily on the part of commercial bottom trawlers, and increasing marine pollution.

The Alaska Wildlife Alliance has been active with the campaign to get the Cook Inlet Beluga whales listed as an endangered species.

Contact USFWS!

The US Fish & Wildlife service should be contacted and asked to do everything possible to get the polar bear on the Endangered Species list.

Stop Global Warming!

All of us can be active in our own way, especially locally, in the campaign to stop global warming. Ultimately, this is the only hope for the long-term survivability of Alaska’s polar bears.
