Support Alaska's Wildlife!
Pebble Mine PDF Print E-mail

Background

North America’s biggest open pit mine is being proposed for the heart of Alaska’s most wildlife-rich region. If the mega-rich Canadian Pebble Mine promoters (Northern Dynasty) are allowed to develop this behemoth project, the Exxon Valdez oil spill could seem insignificant in terms of negative impact.

What AWA Will Do

AWA will be providing links which will allow monitoring of this significant threat to Alaska’s wildlife.

LTEs

Letters to the Editor can include the following points:

  • 100 miles of new roads will devastate this remote wilderness region.
  • Several dams, including one over 4.3 miles long and over 700 feet high, will become the worlds largest dam holding back toxic waste capable of destroying the world’s richest salmon fishery in Bristol Bay. Note that these earthen dams will be built in one of North America’s most earthquake-prone regions.
  • The energy and water alone needed for this project will both create massive environmental problems.
  • The greatest concentration of brown bears on earth that are dependent on the world’s most productive salmon streams of this region will be among the dozens of species decimated by this project.
