Grants and Development Director

The Development Director is responsible for leading all fundraising for Alaska Wildlife Alliance (AWA) to support our organization operations and wildlife conservation programs. The position develops, implements and monitors a comprehensive fundraising plan to expand philanthropic support for the organization including identifying and strengthening relationships with philanthropic partners, actively pursuing and managing corporate and individual contributions, fostering strong donor stewardship, and seeking, applying for and managing grant funding. Additionally, this position plans two fundraising events each year.

We are currently building organizational capacity, and flexible for this position to be full or part time depending on the preference and availability of the right candidate.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE MUST

  • Have a commitment to protecting Alaska’s wildlife and ecosystems

  • Prior grant writing and grant management experience

  • Proven work experience as a Development Director or similar role

  • Superb written and verbal communication skills to speak with grant managers, donors and other community stakeholders

  • Work with fundraising software and tools to track progress throughout the year

  • Good organizational and time management skills to help keep projects on track

  • Familiar with the non-profit community ecosystem in Alaska and a demonstrated history of partnering with other entities to either develop grant proposals or implement projects.

Primary Responsibilities

Grant Writing and Management

  • Lead role in working with AWA program staff on grant development and management to build organizational capacity and sustainability including grant writing and submission of grants for local, state and federal funding opportunities. Grant management duties include review of grant solicitations and request for proposals. Lead role with preparing grant application materials for submission. Work with grant subawards and managing all aspects of grant programmatic and financial requirements.

  • Monitor subawards and work with community partners to secure grants.

  • Grant writing includes overall responsibility for the development of proposal abstracts, letters of intent, summary data sheet, proposal narratives with purpose of the proposal, what will be done and who will implement the proposal. Development of budget worksheets and budget narratives. Development of all required grant attachments working with AWA’s staff.

  • Development of grant opportunities through outreach, networking and partnerships with community agencies on grant applications.

  • Maintaining grant files for audit including completing and maintaining documentation for award conditions and completing grant set up, budget approval, progress report submission and approval, financial report submission and approval.

  • Primary grant administrator in submitting grant applications and managing existing grants. Oversee grant deliverables and meeting all programmatic and fiscal reporting requirements.

  • Set priorities and monitor grant submission deadlines.

Fundraising and Development

  • Work with AWA staff and Board to grow revenue sources to meet community needs. Direct fundraising activities including planning events, interacting with donors to encourage ongoing contributions and seeking out opportunities for financial support through contracts and special events.

  • Maintain donor list and engage donors in AWA’s work. This role is crucial in ensuring that the AWA’s supporters feel appreciated and connected to the impact of their philanthropy. 

  • Develop marketing strategies with AWA’s services across the state and networking with community partners and potential funders.

  • Assist with AWA’s website, social media and marketing activities.

  • Review and negotiate contractual work opportunities.

  • Collaborate with staff to create and implement an annual fundraising plan.

  • Develop and maintain relationships with existing donors.

  • Develop and obtain financial support from new individuals and organizations.

Qualifications

  • Candidate works remotely; based in Alaska is preferred but not required for the right candidate.

  • Experience working in Alaska, particularly on community projects and grassroots mobilization. We’re looking for someone who enjoys creating networks and isn’t afraid to call or have coffee with new people.

  • Minimum of five years’ experience with grant writing and program development in non-profit or other settings, or transferable work experience.

  • Experience in writing and managing federal or state grants required.

  • Excellent technical writing skills.

  • Track record of coordinating multiple projects and successfully building agency capacity.

  • Ability to manage competing demands, establish priorities and meet all deadlines.

  • Cultural competency to work with a diverse range of people

  • Excellent listening and retention skills

  • Ability to thrive in a start-up environment; A self-starter, with a demonstrated ability to work effectively as a member of a team or independently depending on the project

COMPENSATION

This position is available in either a part or full time capacity, depending on the candidate. The rate per hour is $32-$34.50 depending on experience. This position is eligible for an annual Bonus based on the discretion of the Board.
