Wildlife Wednesday: Karelian Bear Dogs Help Protect Wildlife

Wildlife Wednesday is back for the season, and we are super excited for our first presentation! Join us for an hour-long Zoom presentation with Wind River Bear Institute on October 21.

Wind River Bear Institute (WRBI) is on a mission to advance the use of Wildlife K-9s to reduce human-wildlife conflict and make the world safer for bears and people. WRBI Director Nils J. Pedersen, of Fairbanks, Alaska, will share highlights from the Institute’s 30-year history of pioneering nonlethal approaches to bear management, including contributions to the development of bear spray, the principles of Bear Shepherding, and the use of Karelian Bear Dogs as Wildlife K-9s. These intelligent, friendly, and highly trained dogs work alongside their handlers to locate bears, move them away from areas where conflicts may occur, and help prevent dangerous encounters between wildlife and people. Through stories and real-world examples, Nils will demonstrate how Wildlife K-9s are helping reduce the need for lethal management while creating new opportunities for people and wildlife to coexist safely.
