Climate Adaptation Specialist

Alaska Wildlife Alliance is a small, nonprofit organization with a mission to advocate for healthy ecosystems, scientifically and ethically managed to protect our wildlife for present and future generations.  We are seeking a Climate Adaptation Specialist to assist with developing our Climate Adaptation Program, particularly in the development of a Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment for four Yup’ik villages on the Bering Sea coast.  The ideal candidate will have a graduate degree in conservation biology or similar field, GIS and spatial modeling skills, knowledge of climate change adaptation, good verbal and written communication skills, and familiarity with Alaska. Alaska Native and rural residents are especially encouraged to apply.

This position is remote, 20–40 hours per week, and is funded for two years with a negotiable start date in 2023.  There is flexibility in establishing this as a contract or salaried role depending on candidate preference. Pay depends on experience, but ranges around $50,000. There is a high likelihood that this position will continue beyond this project, contingent on funding.

Consultant Outreach and Membership Coordinator

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Outreach and Membership Coordinator will bolster community engagement with Alaska Wildlife Alliance’s mission and programs and expand AWA’s membership. This is a contract position for 2023, with the possibility of transitioning to a salaried position in 2024. Position is 50 - 60 hours per month with pay DOE ranging from $20-$30 per hour.

Responsibilities include

  • Engaging with community members, volunteers, and organizational partners to increase participation in wildlife conservation programs. This also includes planning events and managing volunteers.

  • Membership outreach, which includes developing relationships with individual donors, building membership benefits, and assisting in developing annual mailers.

  • Supporting organizational communications such as social media posts and website content.

  • Exploring new partnerships and opportunities for community engagement across Alaska.

  • This position in based in Alaska and will work from home. Access to reliable internet and phone service is required.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience working in Alaska, particularly on community projects and grassroots mobilization. We’re looking for someone who enjoys creating networks and isn’t afraid to call or have coffee with new people.

  • Excellent people skills and a passion for wildlife

  • Ability to write succinctly

  • Experience in developing  visual content and social media postings. Candidate will develop visuals through our online Canva platform

  • Familiarity with video conferencing platforms such as Zoom

  • Experience with Squarespace is a plus

  • Ability to thrive in a start-up environment

  • Track-record of successful communications or marketing work

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously

  • Cultural competency to work with a diverse range of people

  • Excellent listening and retention skills

  • A self-starter, with a demonstrated ability to work effectively as a member of a team or independently depending on the project
