Prince of Wales Island is a world unto itself - Black bears fish for salmon in streams and creeks, wandering the island’s beaches and forests. Sea otters feed on shellfish while wrapped up in kelp beds. Sitka black-tailed deer can be seen through the trees of the Tongass National Forest. Humpback whales, Steller sea lions, harbor seals, and a variety of sea birds come to feed in the nutrient-rich waters.
But perhaps most notably, this special place is also home to a small and unique population of island wolves -- the Alexander Archipelago wolves. These wolves have been petitioned for the Endangered Species Act protections multiple times, with their Island population hovering around just 200 individuals. Much of our route remains undiscovered by tourism, so we're charting our own path to Prince of Wales Island to witness wildlife in a once-in-a-lifetime setting.
Join Alaska Wildlife Alliance (AWA) on this 7-day wildlife conservation expedition on the research vessel Endeavour to the west side of Prince of Wales Island. Learn about AWA’s work to recover these coastal wolves while conducting bird and sea mammal counts of our own. We will also be investigating the extensive logging practices on the island by land and sea. Specifically, how well (or not) the previous cut tracts have recovered, and the extent to which modern harvesting practices are more ecologically sound than the old, particularly to wildlife and biodiversity.
In addition to supporting AWA’s wildlife conservation work, all the wildlife data we gather on board will be shared with agencies to inform conservation.
