Anchorage Safe Trails Ordinance Hearing

PUBLIC HEARING ON TUESDAY FEBRUARY 25 before the ANCHORAGE MUNICIPAL ASSEMBLY

There will be a public hearing before the Anchorage Municipality on Tuesday, February 25 shortly after 6:00pm at the Loussac Library regarding the Safe Trails Ordinance.  Among other provisions, the SAFE TRAILS ORDINANCE, which passed the Assembly last year, makes it unlawful to place a trap within 50 yards of a "developed trail" within the Anchorage municipality. This ordinance was proposed to protect dogs from being caught and killed on popular Anchorage-area trails. The definition of a developed trail is as follows:

"Developed trail" means any trail or footpath designated under AS 41.21.850 et seq., or marked, signed or designated by the municipality, excluding off-shoot trails. Any trailhead with a graded parking area and signage is a developed trail and the prohibited trapping zone extends the length of the mainstem(s) of the trail(s).

Now, the Assembly is voting on the list of designated trails, designated as AR 2020-36. Click here to view the Ordinance and list of trails under consideration. The public hearing will address this list of trails.

Alaska Wildlife Alliance supported this Ordinance and encourages our Anchorage members to review the list of trails and consider emailing or testifying at the Assembly meeting to ensure that the trails you wish to protect are listed.

You can view interactive maps by clicking here and scrolling to "Parks and Recreation". These interactive maps show not only trails, but also areas closed pursuant to other provisions in the ordinance: namely lands owned by the Municipality, land close to trailheads and campgrounds, and land where "dwellings" are within 1/4 mile of each other, and thus subject to the provision prohibiting traps within 1/4 mile of a dwelling.
