Wildlife Wednesday on Pacific Walruses - Recording Available!

If you missed our January Wildlife Wednesday, don’t worry! We’ve uploaded the recording to our YouTube page. Linda Shaw also generously passed along a PowerPoint of her trip to Round Island that you can view at the bottom of this page.

Enjoy an hour-long presentation on walruses with US Fish and Wildlife Service wildlife biologist Devin Johnson! Devin is part of the USFWS Marine Mammals Management - Walrus Program, and works on population models to predict how walruses will respond to climate change. He participates in fieldwork to monitor harvest and assess population abundance and haulout mortality. Devin will provide an overview on recent publications and ongoing efforts by the Fish and Wildlife Service and their research partners to better understand the Pacific walrus population. Specifically, he will describe a recent modeling effort that simulates how the population may be affected by different future sea ice and harvest scenarios. He will also summarize recent fieldwork to estimate population abundance and collaborative efforts with Alaska Native communities to monitor harvest.
